1. Talk with the
children about
different shapes.
Challenge them to
name shapes and
say how many sides
they have.
2. Take the children
on a shape walk
around the school
or in an area close
to school.
3. Remind the
children to look for
shapes in the
natural environment. For example, the children may see triangle signs and
rectangle doors.
4. After the walk, return to the classroom. Talk with the children about the shapes
they saw.
5. Hand out pencils and paper to each child. Encourage the children to draw the
objects they saw on the walk on their shape sheet. Help the children label the
shapes.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the child identify by name the shapes he sees on the shape walk?
l After returning to the classroom, can the child draw images of some of the
shapes he saw while on the shape walk?
