Materials

large rectangular piece of cardboard or tagboard (11" x 17" or larger)

marker

shape stencils

craft knife

paint

re-sealable bag

Instructions

1. Using a marker, divide the piece of cardboard into six equal sections. 2. In each of the sections, trace a shape using a stencil. Choose six different shapes (circle, square, triangle diamond, heart, star, rectangle, and so on). 3. Using a craft knife, cut them out so that they leave a hole where they should go. Set the pieces aside. These will be the puzzle pieces and the cardboard will serve as the frame. 4. Paint each section and its corresponding shape the same color, using a different color for each shape pair. Let dry. 5. Write the name of the shape on each of the pieces and under or above the cut holes in the frame. 6. When it is ready, let the children come over and see if they can match up each shape with the correct hole. More to do For older children, you can use different colors to make it more challenging. You can even paint the entire puzzle the same color so that children pay attention to matching the shape, not the color.
