Instructions

l Send a note home that the children will be learning about shapes and that
you will be designating each day to be about one specific shape.
l Use colored masking tape to display the outline of the shape of the day on
the floor. Present smaller sizes of the shape made from construction paper.
What to Do
1. Each morning for a week, show the children the different taped shape outline
on the floor. Invite the children to fill the taped shape with blocks.
2. After the shape is completely full of blocks, help the children count out how
many blocks it took to fill the shape.
3. Engage the children in a discussion about the characteristics of each shape. Ask
them how many sides each shape has, and to compare the shapes to see
which shapes required the greater number of blocks.
4. Each day after the children leave, change the shape outline on the floor to the
shape for the following day.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the child identify the block shape outlined on the floor?
l Can the child help count the number of block used to fill the shape?
l Does the child indicate that he has an understanding of the differences
between the shapes from day to day?
