rubber stamp and stamp pad or stickers

brown purse or bag

American flag

Instructions

l Set up a small post office in the dramatic play center. Display the flag and
sign. Fill the bag or purse with paper shapes.
l Attach a large paper shape to each shoebox.
l Cut a slit in each box top so children can insert mail in the box.
l Display the shape mailboxes randomly about the room.
What to Do
1. Invite the children to use the stickers or a rubberstamp and stamp pad to
"stamp" the mail before it goes in the mailbag.
2. Challenge the children to put on the mailbag, remove one shape at a time,
and deliver it to the correct shape mailbox.
3. Encourage the children to work until they deliver all the shape mail.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
l Other children can open the mailboxes and remove the mail to see if the
shapes match.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Hand a child six different pieces of shape mail. Observe the child delivering
the mail to see if she can match shapes correctly.
l Fill the mailbag with pictures of objects with a variety of shapes. Invite the
children to come forward one by one, pull a picture from the mailbag, and
then deliver it to the correct shape mailbox.
