Materials

variety of small shape objects that sink and float

4 colorful plastic picnic lunch plates

permanent marker (adult only)

Instructions

l Use permanent marker to draw a shape on each plate.
l Place the shape objects in and on the water. Some will sink. Some will float.
What to Do
1. Encourage the children to select an object from the water, identify its shape
and say whether the object sinks or floats.
2. Then have the children set the
object on the plate with the
matching shape.
3. Have the children continue until
they remove all the shape objects
from the water and put them on
the correct plates.
4. Afterwards, invite the children to
dump the items back into the
water for the next group of
children.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the child identify the shapes by name?
l Can the child put the shapes on the correct plates?
