Instructions

Cut brightly colored construction paper into the shapes in the vocabulary list.
l Make each shape a different color and approximately 5" x 5".
l Write the name of the shape on the card.
l Laminate and round any sharp corners.
What to Do
1. Show each shape card to the children and have them repeat the name of each
shape.
2. Place the cards on the floor or table and encourage the children to race to pick
up the card as you name it. Also consider placing the cards in a line along a
wall and having the children run to retrieve the appropriate cards.
3. For a language exercise, display the cards and ask a child, "What shape do you
like?" The child picks a card and describes it, saying, for instance, "I like
hearts. How about you?"
4. For an art activity, show the children how to place the cards under thin paper
and trace the shapes in pencil. They can then color or decorate their shapes.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
l You can also back these versatile cards with self-adhesive magnetic strips so
that they stick on a cookie sheet or whiteboard.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Are the children learning about ovals, crescents, and drops as well as basic
shapes?
l How engaged were the children during the exchange about the shape?
