Instructions

Draw a variety of shapes on the pieces of construction paper.
l Cut out some of the shapes for the younger children.
What to Do
1. Show the children a piece of construction paper with the shapes drawn on it.
Point to the shapes and ask the children to identify them.
2. Help the children cut the shapes out and glue them on a piece of white paper
to make an animal.
3. Encourage the children to use at least three different shapes to make their
animals and at least two different colors of shapes. To check for understanding
as the children work, ask them to name the different shapes and colors they
are using.
4. Provide crayons so the children can add details to their animals, such as eyes,
ears, stripes, and spots.
5. When each child finishes making an animal, ask her to identify the animal she
has made. Write the name of the animal at the top of the child's paper.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
l This lesson is primarily a large group activity, but can work very well with a
small group. Also consider making a center of the activity by adding a set of
picture directions that the children can follow in addition to instructions.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can each child use the shapes to create an animal?
l Can each child use and name at least three different shapes and two different
colors?
l Are each child's small motor skills age appropriate?
