Instructions

1. Use a permanent marker, chalk, or tape to add six new squares to a hopscotch grid.

2. Draw a shape in each added square (see illustration on the following page).

3. Have the children form a circle around the grid.

4. Hand beanbags to several children and invite them to take turns tossing their beanbag onto the grid.

5. Whenever a beanbag lands on a number or shape, the children recite that number or shape in unison.

6. If a child misses the grid completely, the nearest child may pick it up and toss it back to the child.

7. After a child tosses a beanbag onto the grid, she sits down.

8. Once the beanbags have landed on the grid, invite two "helpers" to gather the beanbags and toss them to the children that remain standing in the circle.

9. When everyone is sitting down, invite all the children to stand, join hands, and circle around the grid as they sing a favorite number song.

10. Repeat the activity several times.More to do Language and Literacy: Create an assortment of alphabet hopscotch grids on the playground. Invite the children to hop along the grid and name the letters as they land on them.
