Materials
cardstock
yarn (or shoelaces) hole punchInstructions
l Cut the cardstock into large squares.
l Draw a shape on each square and punch holes along the shape.
l Tie one end of a piece of yarn onto each shape through a hole.
l Wrap tape around the other end of the yarn so that it is easier to work with
and will not unravel. You will need at least one shape per child.
What to Do
1. Show the children all the various shapes. Talk with the children about each
shape, helping them to identify the shapes by name.
2. Demonstrate for the children how to sew the outlines of
the shapes in the pieces of cardstock by sewing
the yarn through the holes. Invite the children
to pick up a card and some string and try
sewing the shapes themselves.
3. As the children are sewing the shapes, talk with
them about the characteristics of the shapes.
4. After the children complete sewing one shape's
outline, encourage them to trade cards with
other children, so they can learn about other shapes.
5. At the end of the activity, ask the children to describe
the different characteristics of the shapes they sewed.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the child identify by name the shapes that she is sewing?
l Can the child count the numbers of sides of the shape or describe other
characteristics of the shape she is sewing?
