Instructions
1. Hang a large, plain-colored piece of cardboard on a wall of your classroom.
2. Glue Velcro strips to the cardboard.
3. Cut out the letters of the alphabet from cardboard, fun foam, felt, or any
other material that will withstand repeated handling. Make several of each
letter, especially the more popular ones.
Author's Note: As a rule of thumb, the lower a letter's Scrabble score, the
more you need to make.
4. Stick a piece of Velcro on the back of each letter.
5. Put the letters in a container and let the children pick them out and stick
them to the Velcro on the wall to form words. Their names are good to start
with, but also encourage them to write words related to the classroom
theme.
6. Encourage the children to form words on the wall when they are waiting for
a new activity or for others to finish.
7. Another way to use the letters is to hang one letter at a time and let only
those children whose name begins with that letter move to the next activity,
put on their coat, go outside, and so on.
More to do Language: Instead of using letters, try writing words on narrow strips of
cardboard or card stock. Include a good mixture of nouns, verbs, adjectives, and
so on, and then ask the children to arrange them into sentences. If they are
very ambitious, they could even try arranging the words into a short story!
