Materials
- sheet of 8" x 10" poster board per child (white is best for drawing, colored is better for adding on pictures)
- clear contact paper (enough to cover poster board front and back) crayons, markers, and pencils
- ruler
- seasonal images cut from magazines
What to do
1. Give each child a piece of poster board.
2. Divide each side of poster board into two equal parts by drawing a line down the middle of each side (two seasons per side).
3. Help the children write the names of the seasons at the tops of the squares.
4. Try to group summer/spring and winter/fall together.
5. Set out markers, pencils, and crayons, and invite the children to draw seasonappropriate images in each season's box. Also make precut images available for the children to glue into the boxes.
6. After the children finish decorating the sections of their poster board, help the children sign their boards and then laminate them for durability.
7. Invite the children to use their placemats for snack time.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip s
- This makes a great activity for Family Night. Parents, family members, and children can take the placemats home to reinforce the concept of seasons.
- Ask the children to bring seasonal pictures cut from magazines from home; or provide time for the children to cut out the pictures in class.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
- Do the children know that each season has specific symbols snow in the winter, flowers in the spring, leaves falling in the fall?
- Can the children place appropriate pictures under each season?
-Donna Alice Patton, Hillsboro, OH
