different sizes of wood slices (available from a tree trimmer,

carpenter, or fallen trees)

sandpaper

craft sticks (optional)

paint or markers

safety glasses (optional)

Instructions

1. Cut poster board into rectangles about the size of playing cards. Make one
for each child.
2. Draw a simple picture of a train engine on one side of each card. On the
other side, write the child's name. Laminate for durability.
3. Get the children's attention by putting on a conductor's cap and announcing
(in a squeaky voice), "Boarding the Mouse Train in five minutes! When you
hear your name, you may come get your boarding pass. Be ready to scrunch
your nose and swish your tail."
4. Line up the children.
5. For more variety, choose a different animal to study each week. Change the
train to match.
