four bases

Instructions

l Arrange the four bases as if setting up a baseball diamond.
What to Do
1. Provide each child with a felt shape.
2. Demonstrate how to run the bases in order.
3. Invite the children to recite "first, second, third, home run" aloud.
4. Then, call out a specific shape. For example, "Circles run the bases." At that
command, all children holding a circle run the four bases carrying their circle
along with them.
5. Once all of the children have returned home, direct another group of children
to run the bases.
6. After all the groups have run the bases, invite the children to change shapes
with a friend.
7. Repeat the activity several times.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
l For extra fun, give each child a 2' segment of crepe paper with a shape drawn
on one end. Invite the children to run with the shape streamer in the air,
letting it fly as they move around the bases.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can each child identify his individual shape?
l Can each child identify the order of the bases?
