Materials

sandpaper

old crayons

copy paper

tape

Instructions

1. Trace and cut numerals out of sandpaper. Tape them onto the table.
2. Peel the paper off the crayons.
3. Give each child a piece of paper and demonstrate how to put the paper
directly on top of a numeral and rub with a crayon.
4. The numeral will appear "magically" on their paper.
5. Talk about the numerals. Ask them what else they could rub, such as leaves,
coins, or fabric. Try out a few materials (if desired) to see what works.
More to do Cut out a large set of numerals (0 to 9) from sandpaper. Place them on a wall at
eye level. Let the children feel the curves and bumps of the numerals.
