large poster board

pictures of objects from computer clip art or magazines

Instructions

l Cut or print pictures that are round or square. Make sure there are enough for
each child to have one.
l Draw a line down the middle of the poster board to make a two-column
chart.
l Title the columns with "Things that are round" and the other with "Things that
are square." Draw a picture for "round" and "square."
l Place the pictures in a bag or a basket.
What to Do
1. Gather the children. Show them the chart and talk about the shapes on it.
2. Give each child a picture and let him describe the shape.
3. Ask all the children if they think that their objects are round or square.
4. Give each child a piece of tape to place his picture in the appropriate column
on the chart.
5. When all of the children have had a turn, talk with the children about objects
that are round and square.
6. When the chart is complete, display it in the math area.

l When the children are ready, create a chart with three shapes: circle, square,
and triangle.
l Consider doing this activity with real objects in the classroom instead of
pictures.

To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the child identify the featured shapes in the environment?
l Can the child classify other objects in the classroom by shape?
