What to do
1. Ahead of time, cut the outside outline of a spider web shape from paper for each child, varying
the shapes, if you choose. Encourage older children to cut their own shapes with some guidance.
2. Protect a work surface with newspaper and supply the children with drawing tools. Provide a
shallow box and place a few marbles in a cup of paint.
3. Invite the children to create a pattern of lines across their web by laying their paper in the box,
scooping up the marbles with a spoon, and rolling them across their paper in a crisscross pattern.
4. When the children have finished their web, have them dip their index finger into black paint
and make two fingerprints on the web to represent the body of the spider. Have them draw the
spider's eight legs.
5. Punch a hole near the edge of the web and tie a string through it.
More to do
More art: Create webs in different shapes and colors and create a mobile. Design greeting cards
with spiders made from fingerprints. Embroider a simple spider or web design on embroidery
cloth.
Outdoors: Hunt for spider webs around the schoolyard.
