Instructions

Gather a large collection of rocks, stones and pebbles. Children love bringing rocks from home. Here are various ways to use the rocks:1. Classify them by size or weight; sort by size, color and texture.2. Put the rocks on a balance scale and let the children predict and estimate how many small rocks will equal a large, how many foam blocks or other lightweight items will equal one rock, etc.3. What happens when you freeze rocks; heat rocks?4. Use rocks like chalk outside.5. Put a large rock in a clear container of water that you have marked at the water level. What happens to the water level when you add the rock? Use the word displacement.6. Paint rocks for paperweight presents or just for an art experience. Read Sylvester and the Magic Pebble.
