newspaper

markers or paints suitable for cardboard

paintbrushes

child-safe scissors

construction paper

glue

paint smocks (optional)

Instructions

1. Display several rhythm instruments as you demonstrate how each one makes a
different sound.
2. Display the assorted recyclables on a table. Talk with the children about
reusing the materials to create new rhythm instruments.
3. Guide the children in creating a simple rhythm instrument using the materials.
4. Help the children fill small glass or plastic containers with a handful of dried
beans then attach the lid to create a "shaker." Use an aluminum can and a
spoon as a drum. Use an oatmeal container with a lid as a bongo drum. Use a
cardboard tube like a horn.
5. Encourage creativity as the children experiment and make music with the
instruments.
6. Invite the children to form a single- or double-file line as they carry their newly
created instruments.
7. Play a favorite recycling song and invite the class to march around the room,
keeping the beat and singing along as you celebrate taking care of our Earth.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* How well do the children keep the beat with the instruments?
* Can the children follow specific instructions with their instruments?
* Do the children recognize the recycling aspect of this activity?
