Instructions
1. Cut out a set of pictures of sight words from a teacher supply catalog or
workbooks (for example, pictures of different animals). Print the pictures on
6" x 9" oak tag to make picture cards.
2. Create a set of 3" x 5" flash cards with simple words to accompany the
pictures.
3. Put matching pictures on the back of each word card so that the children
can self-correct themselves. Laminate and cut out, if desired.
4. Place a pocket chart in the Book Nook for word recognition. Ask the
children to slip a word card into the chart, and then slip the matching picture
in the slot that goes with the word. Children can look at the back of the word
card to check their pairs.
5. Children enjoy working together so they can verify each other's answers.
When one child has matched all the cards, they can switch roles and start
again.
6. Change the cards weekly to keep interest fresh and to expand children's
sight word vocabulary. Challenge older children to look at the picture side of
a word card, spell the word, and then flip to the word to check their answers.
