Materials

  • cardboard or tagboard for patterns
  • black construction paper 12" x 18"
  • marker
  • scissors
  • white pencil or white crayon
  • red construction paper
  • red sequins
  • white glue
  • gray tempera paint
  • white tempera paint
  • paintbrush
  • black crayon

What to do

1. Draw the entire loon and the cutaway wing on tagboard to make two patterns (see illustration). Cut out the patterns for children to trace.

2. Fold a piece of 12" x 18" black paper in half. Place the loon pattern at the bottom of the fold. Trace the loon on the doubled paper.

3. Cut out the loon, leaving the bottom fold area intact (this will make two loons that are connected at the bottom).

4. Trace the wing area on both loons using a white pencil or white crayon.

5. Cut out two red circles about  1/2 " in diameter. Glue an eye on each bird.

6. Glue red sequins in the middle of both eyes.

7. Glue the head and beak area on both birds together. Paint the beaks gray on both sides.

8. Paint a white stripe on the neck, and around the wing to the bottom of the loon on both sides. Allow paint to dry.

9. Make wavy black stripes on the neck and near the wing using black crayon. Paint white dots on both wings.

10. Fold at the bottom edge of the bird. Push the fold of the double black paper up and in to make a three-dimensional bird.
