paper towels

plastic or metal utensils

other items, some of which can be recycled and others not

Instructions

* Ahead of time, ask the children to bring in a picture of
themselves.
* Fold paper in half and label one side "living" and the
other side "not living."
What to Do
1. Show the picture of yourself and explain that it is you
when you were younger.
2. Tell the children how old you were then and ask them
what differences they notice.
3. Ask the children if they will grow too and if their picture
will grow. Why not? List their answers on the board.
Focus on the concept of living. Discuss what else lives.
4. Give each child a picture of a living or nonliving thing.
Have the children sort their picture into a "living" or "not
living" group one at a time, and write their answers on
the board. The rest of the children can help decide if they are correct.
5. Give each child a packet of new pictures and a sheet to classify them
on. Have them glue the pictures on the correct half of the paper.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
* Pictures of the children could be included in the
packets.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Are the children able to classify the objects correctly?
* Are the children able to recognize what is alive?
