Materials
2 containers or garbage pails
5 objects each child brings from home
related children's books (see list for suggestions)
large sheets of paper folded into 3 sections (1 sheet per child)
crayons
Instructions
* Write a number between 1 to 5 on each object so there are three sets of five
objects. Put the objects in containers, also labeled 1 to 5.
* Display the containers randomly on a table or shelf to create a "store."
* Display a sign that reads "Store" at the table.
What to Do
1. Remind the children that when we grocery shop we can also help take care of
our Earth.
2. Explain that many items we purchase at grocery stores come in containers that
can be recycled.
3. Display the reusable shopping bags and share how people can use special
reusable grocery bags in place of paper bags, and how this can save trees.
4. Invite one or more of the children to "go shopping" at the table of containers.
5. Instruct the children to select items with numbers from 1 to 5 and put them in
their shopping bags.
6. Have each child carry his bag of items to another area of the classroom and
remove the items from the bag.
7. Invite the child to identify each number again and then sequence the items
from 1 to 5, in a row across the floor or table.
8. Give the child a round of applause and then have the child return the items to
the "grocery store."
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Are the children able to select items with the numbers 1 to 5 on them?
* Can the children place the items in correct numerical order?
