Instructions

1. Provide a variety of small buckets and containers.
2. Help the children measure one cup of dirt and put it into a bucket. Have
them add one cup of water to the dirt.
3. The children mix the dirt and water with a spoon or their hands. After mixing,
the children can decide if the mud is the right consistency, or if it is too thin or
too thick.
4. If the mud is too thin (or too thick), ask them what they can do to make it
thicker (or thinner). Let them add another cup of dirt if it is too thin, or a cup
of water if it is too thick.
5. When the mud is "just right," help each child write down his recipe for mud.
They might write the numerals and you can write the words (for example, 2
cups dirt + 1 cup water = mud).
