Instructions

Make a set of white cards approximately 3" x 4" in size.
l Write the name of one of the 10 shapes on each card and laminate.
l Draw the 10 shapes whose names you wrote on the first 10 cards on the 10
remaining cards.
What to Do
1. Display a Shape Card and ask the children to name the shape on the card.
2. Show the matching Word Card and help the children identify the word.
Initially, it is better to play with a few cards.
3. Encourage the children to play matching games on the floor, table, or
whiteboard. For example, line the Shape Cards up on the whiteboard and
hand a child a Word Card. Help him read it if necessary. Then help the child
place the Word Card under the corresponding Shape Card.
4. To make it a language game, give each child a Shape Card or a Word Card.
The task is to find a matching shape by asking and answering, "What shape do
you have?" "I have a square."
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
l For an advanced challenge, place the Word Cards or Shape Cards on the
whiteboard and have the children write the shape names under the cards
with a whiteboard marker.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children match a shape to its name?
l Are the children beginning to learn how to spell the names of shapes?
