Materials
Cardboard mailing tubes, preferably with metal stoppers
Aluminum foil
Filler, such as sand, pebbles, coins, small plastic objects
Glue
Tempera paint
Paintbrushes
Instructions
1. Beforehand, cut sheets of aluminum foil in lengthsgreater than the length of the mailing tube.
2. Tightly roll a sheet of the foil into a stick shape, thenshape it into a coil. Repeat the process with severalsheets of aluminum for each rainstick.
3. Make certain that one end of each child's tube isclosed securely. Have the children insert the coils intheir mailing tube, then add the sand, rice, andbeans.
4. Tell the children to close the open end of their tubewith the stopper. A bit of glue placed around theedge of the stopper holds it in place.
5. Invite the children to paint their rainstick in a designand color of their choice.More to doMusic: Play music and invite the children to use theirrainsticks as percussion instruments or marchingsticks.
