Clear plastic drinking glass filled with water

White paper

Cellophane or masking tape

Watercolors

Brushes

Rinse wate

Instructions

1. Schedule this project for a sunny day. Position a table near a window where the sun will shinethrough the window.

2. Place the glass of water just barely over the edge of the table. Adjust the glass until it catchesthe sunlight and a rainbow appears on the floor.

3. Tape a piece of white paper on the floor where the rainbow appears.

4. Invite the children to trace the rainbow, then paint it using watercolors.More to doScience: Position a hand mirror so that it is facing the sun and watch a rainbow appear on theceiling. Help the children understand that sunlight is many colors in combination; when the sunlighthits the glass or water, it separates into the colors that comprise it: red, orange, yellow, green,blue, indigo, and violet—the colors of the rainbow. Make a rainbow outdoors by spraying a mistinto the air with a garden hose while your back is to the sun.
