Materials

  • Styrofoam cups
  • Blunt pencils
  • Clay
  • Plastic straws
  • Pins

  • Streamers

What to do

1. Give each child a Styrofoam cup.

2. Show the children how to punch a hole into the cup using a pencil.

3. Ask the children to place clay inside their cups. Make sure they put in enough clay to hold it in windy weather.

4. Help the children poke a pin through a drinking straw and into the eraser of the pencil (which should now be sticking out of the cup).

5. Show the children how to cut out triangles from index cards and glue them to each end of the straw.

6. Encourage the children to paint the cups with rainbow paints.

7. Help the children attach different colored streamers to the bottom of their cups for decoration.

8. Place the cups in the wind and watch which way the vane goes!
