Materials

  • Fabric paints in basic colors
  • Pie plates or paint trays
  • Newspaper
  • White T-shirt for each child

What to do

1. Ahead of time, pour fabric paint onto plates or trays, and cover a work area with newspaper. This project should be conducted near a sink.

2. Place a T-shirt on a flat surface in front of each child. Insert a piece of newspaper between the front and back of the shirt to prevent color from transferring.

3. Encourage the children to dip one hand in paint and then make a handprint on their shirt. Have them make a new print with each color, rinsing their hands each time.

4. Allow 48 hours to dry.

More to do

  • Art: Make a handprint on paper at the same time, then use for a greeting card or book cover. Frame the print for a special occasion. Have the children create a border for the bulletin board with their handprints. Create fingerprint drawings.
