What to do

This is a week-long project. Children will work with one color per day.

1. Send home a note explaining to parents that for one week, the class will be focusing on one color each day. Ask parents to dress their children in the color you specify each day.

2. Tape a large piece of white paper on a wall to make a photo background. Each day of the "color week," take a picture of each child wearing the color of the day.

3. Read or tell them a story containing the color of the day.

4. Encourage children to paint on the easel with whatever color is assigned for the day.

5. Play "I Spy" by looking for items in the room that are the same color as the color of the day.

6. Let children make their favorite color sippy cup. Purchase different colored sippy cups with lids (in most craft stores) and candy in the same colors as the cups. Ask the children to pick their favorite color cup and candies in the same color. Let them take their treats home.

7. At the end of the week, help the children make personal color books. Glue colored paper to old board books or staple heavy paper together. Give the children their photographs of them wearing different colored clothing to glue on each page of the book. The children can add feathers, pompoms, or scraps of material for added fun.

Instructions

1. Read books about and show pictures of sandcastles. Discuss the children's
experience with building sandcastles. Explore sandcastles in a variety of
classroom centers!
2. Supply foam, wooden, or cardboard blocks in the Construction Zone for children to
make castles.
3. Place wet sand and molds in a sandbox outdoors or sand table indoors.
Encourage children to manipulate and explore the sand. Challenge them to
build castles with the wet sand.
4. In the Art Station, demonstrate how to paint glue on paper, smooth it with the
paintbrush, and sprinkle sand on top to make a castle.
5. Finish this theme by having a classroom "beach party" with beach balls and
water play!
