Materials

  • Rock salt
  • Measuring cup
  • Small bucket
  • Water
  • Freezer
  • Large bowl
  • Paint aprons
  • Food coloring

What to do

1. Pour  1/2  cup (125 ml) salt into the bottom of the bucket. Fill the bucket with water and place in the freezer overnight.

2. The following day, take the bucket out of the freezer and turn it upside down in the large bowl. Ask the children to put on aprons.

3. The adult squeezes drops of food color onto the block of ice.

4. Encourage the children to touch, pet, feel and observe the ice as it melts and the colors blend. Discuss the melting ice and blending colors and ask for the children's predictions about what will happen to the ice and why. Remember that food coloring may stain skin and clothing.
