Materials

two purses (preferably that open and close with a clasp)

plastic numbers or numbers cut from colorful card stock

Instructions

Place five numbers inside each purse and shut it.
What to Do
1. Ask two children to open the purses.
2. Invite the children to peek at the numbers inside and identify them silently.
3. Have the two children take turns removing a number from the purse and using
the number in a sentence, such as "I'm going to buy two apples," or "I'm going
to spend five dollars on lunch."
4. After all five numbers have been removed from each purse, have the children
place the numbers back inside for the next pair of players.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
* Purchase an assortment of fun and fancy purses at rummage sales or secondhand
shops. Consider purchasing several wallets as well. Place an assortment
of colorful paper or card stock number cards inside each wallet. Use the
wallets in the same way the purses were used.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
* Listen to each pair of children as they play the game. Evaluate their number
recognition and language skills.
* Display an assortment of number cards before the class. Can the children
match the numbers from the purse with the numbers on display?
