Instructions
1. Sing the children's favorite color song as they pass the baskets around the
circle.
2. When the song ends, whoever is holding a basket stands up.
3. The children chant, "What color do you have, [child's name]?" The child
responds by naming the color of her basket.
4. The children reply by chanting, "Hurry up, pick one up."
5. The child searches and finds an object of the same color to place inside her
basket.
6. Meanwhile, the children repeat the chant with the remaining children holding
baskets.
7. As soon as each participant finds an object, she hurries back to the circle area
with her basket.
8. Once all children have returned, invite the children to talk about the object
they found and then place the items in the center of the circle.
9. Repeat the activity several times until all children have had one or more turns.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip S
l Purchase different colored baskets inexpensively during post-holiday sales or
find them at nearby rummage sales.
l As an alternative, attach a large colored ribbon or paper shape to plain brown
wicker baskets to designate colors.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children name the colors of their baskets and describe the objects
they find?
l After the activity, invite each child to pick up one or more objects from the
center of the circle area. Display the baskets in the center of the circle. Can
each child name the color of her object and then place it in the matching
colored basket?
