1 can evaporated milk 3/4 cup (175 mL) sugar
1 teaspoon (5 mL) cinnamon

What to do
1. On a day prior to your party, have the children make their placements by dipping a lid into
paint and pressing the lid onto their paper, leaving a circle or pumpkin shape. Have them make
several pumpkin prints across their paper. Let the children dip the block into paint and add a
stem to each pumpkin.
2. Encourage the children to draw expressions on their pumpkins using markers. Set the papers
aside to dry.
3. When the paint dries, cover the placemats with contact paper or laminate them for protection
from spills.
4. Before class on the day of the party, cut up a pumpkin, wrap it in foil, and bake it at 350 degrees F
(180 degrees C) until it is soft.
5. Invite the children to scoop out the pumpkin. (As an alternative, use canned pumpkin.)
6. Help the children measure and mix the ingredients: add sugar to the pumpkin first, then the
spices. Beat the eggs, then add them to the mixture. Add the milk and the melted butter last.
7. Pour the mixture into the pie shells and bake at 350 degrees F (180 degrees C) until a knife blade inserted in
the pie comes out clean.
8. Set your table for the pumpkin party and enjoy a slice of pumpkin pie.
More to do
More art: Make a picture using some of the pumpkin seeds and save the others to plant in the
schoolyard.
Original poem
Pumpkin Magic
I made a jack-o-lantern,
A jolly one was he,
With two big eyes, and two big teeth
A-grinning back at me!
I lost my jack-o-lantern,
But I'm not sad, not I!
I lost my jack-o-lantern,
But, I made a pumpkin pie!
