Materials

5 cups (1 1/4 kg) of sugar 1 cup (250 ml) margarine or butter, softened1 cup (250 ml) applesauce 1 cup (250 ml) vegetable oil8 eggs 32 ounce can of pumpkin4 teaspoons (20 ml) baking soda 2 teaspoons (10 ml) salt2 teaspoons (10 ml) cinnamon 1 teaspoon (5 ml) baking powder 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) cloves 7 cups (1 3/4 kg) of flour2 large bowls Empty soup cans or small aluminum loaf pans

Instructions

This recipe makes a loaf for each child to take home for Thanksgiving dinner.

1. With the children helping and taking turns, combine the sugar, softened margarine or butter, applesauce and oil. Mix until smooth.

2. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each egg.

3. Blend in the pumpkin.

4. Combine all dry ingredients in a separate bowl, mix well and add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients.

5. Pour the batter into greased soup cans or loaf pans.

6. Bake at 350 degrees F (180 degrees C) for about 1 hour and 10 minutes or until a wooden toothpick comes out clean.More to doField trip: Go on a field trip to a pumpkin patch to pick your own pumpkins.
