Instructions
1. Talk with the children about the people they know in their neighborhood.
Explain to the children that the people who live nearby are called "neighbors."
2. Teach the children the following fingerplay:
Five Nice Neighbors by Susan Oldham Hill
Five nice neighbors in the neighborhood. (hold up all five fingers on one hand)
Acting kind and friendly like neighbors should.
The first nice neighbor helped someone build a wall. (point one finger in the air)
The second neighbor helped a girl find her big, red ball. (point two fingers in the
air)
The third nice neighbor helped a lady wash her car. (point three fingers in the air)
And the fourth nice neighbor taught the boys to play guitar. (point four fingers in
the air)
The fifth nice neighbor fixed someone's doorbell chime, (point five fingers in the air)
And they all went out to dinner and had a great time!
3. After reciting the fingerplay with the children, show them the large numeral cards.
Explain that each card indicates a specific number.
4. Select five children, and have them stand in front of the class, holding the cards in
order from one to five.
5. Recite the fingerplay with the children again, having each child hold up the
appropriate card when the children say that number.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children recite the fingerplay?
l Can the children hold up the correct number of fingers at the appropriate time?
l Can the children holding the number cards wave them at the appropriate time?
