modeling dough/clay

rolling pin (optional)

various shaped objects to press into the clay

Instructions

1. Set out several
1/2 "-thick lumps of
clay for the
children to flatten,
either by hand or
with rolling pins.
2. Invite the children
to press an
assortment of objects into
the flattened clay, making an
imprint of each shape.
3. As the children press a variety of
shape objects into the clay, say the names
of different shapes and ask the children to
point to them.
4. When the children finish, have them ball up the clay into a fresh lump for the
another child to use.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the child select the correct shapes when you say the names of the
shapes?
l Can the child make imprints of specific shapes in the clay when you name
a shape?
