writing pencils, colored pencils and/or crayons

Instructions

Cut out large pictures of insects from nature magazines.
* Glue one large insect picture inside each box.
* Print the name of the insect on the inside of the box lid.
* Place the lid on the box.
What to Do
1. Invite two children to sit together. Ask each child to select a bug box.
2. Invite the children to open their boxes and then take turns describing the
insect inside.
3. Encourage the children to identify the colors, body parts, shape, size,
movement, behaviors of the insect.
4. Have the children read the name of the insect inside the box lid. Help the
children read the names if necessary.
5. Have the children close their box and then give it to the partner to peek inside
and read the insect name.
6. Invite the pair of children to select two different bug boxes and repeat the
activity.

* For added appeal, cover each box lid with colored contact paper or
construction paper. Write BUG BOX on each lid.
* Prepare a large number of bug boxes. Stack the boxes in the block corner and
let the children build with the boxes as they talk about the various insects.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Can the children identify the characteristics of various insects?
* Are the children able to read the insects' names without help?
