Instructions
* Read books about beetles.
* Pour the following pairs of paint colors on separate pieces of wax paper:
* blue and yellow * yellow and red * red and green
* red and white * red and blue * white and black
* Use a black permanent marker to draw eyes on the sponges to make several
"clumsy beetles" for each color pair station.
What to Do
1. Read The Very Clumsy Click Beetle by Eric Carle to the children.
2. Discuss the story with the children. Talk with the children about the beetle, and
discuss what makes a beetle an insect. Ask the children to identify its various
body parts.
3. Put the children into groups at each color station. Give each child six index cards.
4. Explain that the children can crawl the "clumsy beetles" from one color paint
on the wax paper into the other, then make a print on the index card. What
color did the beetle make?
5. Groups can move from station to station to try different color pairs.

I'm a Little Beetle by Kristen Peters (Tune: "I'm a Little Teapot")
I'm a little beetle, I have a tiny body,
My shell is hard. It's hard to see.
I'm on a leaf So watch your step
Or somewhere in your yard. Or you'll step on me!
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Can the children predict what will happen when they mix two colors together?
* Are the children able to move their beetles through the paint?
