Instructions
1. Spend several days discussing what an author is. Explore the way stories are
arranged with a beginning, middle, and end. All stories have characters and a
problem that must be solved.
2. Fold several sheets of lined paper in half to create booklets.
3. Ask each child to select a picture and dictate a story about it. Encourage them
to select names for their characters. Ask open-ended questions to help the
child organize his thoughts.
4. When writing down the child's dictation, leave the front page blank to make a
title page.
5. Glue the picture at the top of the title page. Below the picture, print the title
selected by the child. Below the title, write "by (child's name)." Encourage
the child to trace his name with a crayon.
6. At Circle Time, read each child's story to the rest of the children.
More to do
Provide assorted felt board pieces from different stories. Encourage the children
to use them to make up their own stories.
Dramatic Play: Provide puppets, hats, and felt clothes and encourage the children
to create characters and plots.
Field Trips: Take a class trip to the local library.
