Instructions

1. Make a tagboard header card to fit in the top row of a pocket chart with
the title at the top and instructions to: "Solve the problem on each
penguin and place it under the correct answer."
2. Draw a picture of a penguin on the left side of the chart with the
numeral 9 and a penguin on the right side with the numeral 10 to form
two columns.
3. Make a set of cards on tagboard using pictures of penguins. Leave space
on their stomachs to put math problems.
4. Write equations on half of the cards that total nine, and on the rest of
the cards write equations that total ten.
5. If desired, make a file jacket from 12" x 18" construction paper to hold
the activity.
6. If possible, use a color scanner to make a reduced-size printout of the
completed activity showing the penguins under the correct answer.
7. Glue the color printout to the back of the file jacket.
8. Laminate the header card, penguin cards, and file jacket for durability,
and cut out.
9. Hold up a penguin card. Ask a volunteer to look at the equation and tell
you the answer.
10. Place the penguin under the correct answer in the pocket chart.
11. Continue until all the penguins are in place.
12. Place the activity in a center to provide more fun and number review.
The children can look at the back of the file jacket to check their work.
(This picture reference helps ensure that all cards are accounted for
when you put them away at the end of the month.)
