Instructions

1. Explain to the children that they are going to plant both flower bulbs and
flower seeds indoors. (Amaryllis or hyacinth bulbs are good to use for this
activity.)
2. Count both the bulbs and seeds and record the number of each.
3. Ask the children which they believe will sprout first the seeds or the bulbs.
Ask them if they think all the seeds and bulbs will turn into plants.
4. Let the children help plant the seeds and bulbs in small pots area. Make sure
to mark where the bulbs are planted and where the seeds are planted.
5. Water the pots each day.
6. Record which sprouts first a bulb or seed.
7. Record how many of the bulbs turned into plants and then record how many
of the seeds turned into plants.
8. Point out to the children that more bulbs sprout than seeds. For every 10
bulbs, about nine usually sprout. Flower seed packets, on the other hand,
contain many seeds because it takes more seeds to actually develop into
plants.
