Instructions
1. Cut out a fish shape from each sheet of newsprint, as large as the paper allows. Leave a tab by the mouth of the fish (to insert a pipe cleaner later).
2. Staple together the two fish along the edges. Leave the tail and mouth tab open.
3. Encourage the children to decorate the fish on both sides and add a face.
4. Bend a pipe cleaner into a circle and twist together the ends. Open the tab end of the fish's mouth and insert the wire circle. Fold the tabs over the pipe cleaner and staple securely.
5. Tie a 6" (15 cm) piece of yarn to the two exposed sides of the pipe cleaner.
6. Tie a 24" to 36" (60 cm x 90 cm) piece of yarn to the center of the shorter piece of yarn.
7. Bring the fish kites outside. Encourage the children to hold the long yarn over their heads and run! The fish will twist and flap behind the runner.More to do:Look at pictures of fish in books or nature magazines. Notice the scales, colors, and patterns. Observe live fish in classroom fish tanks. Visit an aquarium or pet store. Learn about the Japanese holiday for flying kites. Do some wind and air experiments.
