Materials

One clean pizza box, any size, for each child

Yarn or string

Paint and paintbrush

Construction paper or tissue paper and glue

Markers, cotton balls or yarn bits or pieces of material

Pipe cleaners, optional

Hole punch or pointed scissors

Instructions

1. Pre-cut each side of the pizza box using the butterfly patterns shown below, or allow the children to create their own designs.

2. Let the children decorate the top or both sides of the butterfly using paint, glue, paper and other materials. You might suggest that the children decorate the butterflies symmetrically, so that one wing mirrors the other.

3. Punch two holes along the butterfly's "back" and lace string or yarn through the holes, tying the ends tightly together to make a handle on the butterfly's underside. Use pipe cleaners to create antennae.

4. Show the children how to slip their hands into the handles and move their arms to make the butterfly "fly."
