Instructions

1. Place the materials in the Art Station.
2. Fold the construction paper in half, then cut along the fold line. Make sure
you have enough paper to make books for each child in the class.
3. Make a cover for each of the books titled "(Child's name) Word Book: Clothes
That I Wear." Staple the pages together.
4. During Circle Time, talk about clothes. Ask the children what they put on in
the morning when they get ready for school. For example, ask, "What do you
wear if the weather is cold? What do you wear if it rains? What do you wear
when you play? What do you wear when you go to bed at night?" Make a list
of everything they say.
5. Take the children to the Art Station. Give each child a word book and explain
that they are going to look through magazines and catalogs to find pictures of
the clothes they talked about during Circle Time.
6. Encourage the children to cut out the pictures and paste them into their word
books.
7. When each child has finished, go through his book and write the word for
each picture at the bottom of the page. As you do this, connect the picture
with the word by saying, "This is a picture of a sock and this is how you spell
sock."
8. The children can take their books home and share them with their parents.
More to do
This idea can be extended with themes or concepts. A few examples are:
* Use shapes or numbers instead of clothes.
* Ask the children to find different colored objects and paste them in a word
book. Write the color at the bottom of the page. For example, they can look
for a red apple, blue bird or ball, an orange, a purple grape, a brown bear or
dog, a black cat, a yellow star, a green tree, and a white snowman.
* Make a "parts of the body" word book. Ask the children to cut out pictures
of eyes, ears, noses, and mouths from old magazines and paste them into
the books. Write the word at the bottom of the page.
The list is endless on ways to use a word book. This project helps the children
learn how words connect to the pictures, which will help them learn to read
eventually.
