Instructions

1. Put two hula hoops on the ground.
2. Tell the children what the sorting rule is. "This hoop is for children with white
shoes. This hoop is for children with black shoes."
3. Have all of the children with white shoes stand in the white shoe hoop. All
the children with black shoes stand in the other hoop. If there are too many
children to fit into the hoop, have them stand with one foot inside the hoop.
4. Sort children by other characteristics, such as age, color or style of clothing,
types of shoes, hairstyles, types of pets, and brothers or sisters.
5. Overlap the hoops to make a third category for those who meet both
criteria.
6. Dismiss the children in one hoop to go to the next activity.
More to do Art: Give each child two paper plates. Let them decorate the plates with sorted
colors or shapes.
Math: Play "Guess the Rule." Sort children into groups and let them guess the
sorting rule.
