Materials
Clothespin
Instructions
1. Ahead of time, score lemons across the middle for easier cutting (adult only).
2. Ask the children to help cut the lemons in half. Supervise closely.
3. Place a lemon on the juicer and show the children how to squeeze the juice
by twisting the half of the lemon on the juicer. Pull the lever if using that type
of juicer.
4. Remove the rind and seeds using a strainer.
5. Pour the juice into a pitcher.
6. Now you are ready to make lemonade. Measure and add sugar and water to
the juice in the pitcher. Use approximately 1/2 cup of sugar and 4 cups of
water for every 3 lemons, or to taste. Stir thoroughly.
7. Chill and add safe-size ice shavings or crushed ice and serve. Adding a drop
of red food coloring will make it pink lemonade.
More to do
Art: Snip the rind and note the aroma. Encourage the children to glue the lemon
snippings to poster board to make a yellow collage.
Dramatic Play: Set up a lemonade stand in the Dramatic Play area and serve the
drinks.
Math: Before the lemons are cut and squeezed, ask the children to count them
and sort them by size.
More Math: Save the lemon seeds and use them as a counting activity.
