Instructions

1. Write the numerals 1 to 10 on index cards, one numeral per card.

2. Add drawings to each numeral, making them into pictures the children can recall (see the following page). Be sure to outline these drawings in lighter colors than the numeral itself, so they stand out from one another.* 1 becomes a tree (draw a bunch of branches at the top of the numeral).* 2 becomes a swan (draw a body connected to the bottom line of the numeral).* 3 becomes a snake (add eyes and a mouth to one end of the numeral).* 4 becomes a cactus (add thorns and a shrub at the bottom of the numeral).* 5 becomes a planet with a flag (draw a light line connecting the bottom of the circle to the top, and color the top as though a flag).* 6 becomes a monkey head and arm (put a paw at the top of the numeral and a face in the center of the circle).* 7 becomes a running leg (add a foot at the bottom).* 8 becomes a snowman (add stick arms to the bottom circle and coal eyes and mouth to the top circle).* 9 becomes a flower (the top of the numeral becomes the head of the flower, draw petals around it, dots in the circles, and two leaves at the base).* 10 becomes a fork and plate.

3. Give the children their own cards with numerals written on them. Encourage them to turn the numerals into any picture they want.
