Materials

Lightweight cardboard

Scissors

Crayons or felt-tipped markers

Hole punch

Narrow ribbon or raffia cut in 18" (45 cm) lengths

Stickers, optional

Instructions

1. Ahead of time, cut out a cardboard strip for each child, 8"by 3" (20 cm by 8 cm). Cut out a 2" (5 cm) circle at oneend of the strip to form an opening for a doorknob.

2. Before the project begins, invite the children to think oftheir favorite colors, foods, animals, and interests.

3. When they are ready, have the children turn the doorknobhanger so the opening is at the top. On one side ofthe hanger, ask them to write their name in their favoritecolor (help younger children do this), then draw a selfportrait.

4. When they are finished, have them turn the hanger overand draw their favorite foods, animals, and interests.

5. Punch a hole in the bottom of the hanger and string ribbonor raffia streamers through the opening.

6. Let the children decorate their hanger with stickers, ifthey choose.More to doCircle time: Use the hangers to introduce the children to each other at the beginning of school.Games: Have older children portray their "favorites" by miming them; ask the other children toguess what they are doing.More art: Make doorknob hangers for holidays and special occasions.
