Instructions
l Draw three groups of house shapes on the playground area using the sidewalk
chalk. Leave 20' or more of space between each city (group of houses).
l Write each city name near each group of houses.
l Draw one house per child.
What To Do
1. Invite the children outdoors for this fun movement activity.
2. Gather the children around the chalk drawings.
3. Explain that there are three cities. Recite the city names aloud. Ask the
children if they have ever lived in different cities or towns, and why they
moved.
4. Ask the children to count the houses in each city as they step into each house
shape.
5. After the children are familiar with the locations, invite each child to pick one
house in which to stand.
6. Call out, "Move into a new house!" At that command, the children run or
walk to a new house. Children may choose to move to different cities or stay
in the cities they are in. If children move to new cities, ask them to name the
cities they moved to, as well as the names of the cities they left.
7. Repeat the activity as children have fun running and stepping from house to
house and city to city on the playground.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Do the children know the names of the cities?
l Can the children count the number of cities, houses, and houses within a
particular city?
