Pennies for each child

White paper

Colored pencils

Instructions

1. Supply each child with a few pennies, a white piece of paper, and colored pencils.

2. Have the children put a penny under their paper. Show them how to rub the side of their pencilover the coin, reproducing the image of the penny.

3. Encourage the children to make another rubbing using more coins. Tell them they may arrangesome or all of their pennies in a design.More to doDramatic play: Provide simple props and let the children run a make-believe store or lemonadestand.More art: Make rubbings of leaves, interesting buttons, other coins, or decorative carvings. Make aframe for the rubbings from construction paper or poster board, then use glue to affix old pennies,buttons, or small leaves and baby pine cones to the frame.
